Surface rust on a padel structure can be repaired in many cases, provided the damage is limited to the coating and the top layer of the steel. As soon as rust penetrates deeper into the material and affects the structure, repair is no longer sufficient and components need to be replaced.

How quickly rust develops and how extensive the repair needs to be depends heavily on the location, the type of coating and the level of maintenance. The questions below help you assess what your situation requires.

How does rust form on a padel structure?

Rust on the steel structure of a padel court forms when the steel comes into contact with moisture and oxygen. This process is called oxidation. The coating of the structure, usually a hot-dip galvanised layer or a powder coating, forms the protective barrier. As soon as that barrier is damaged, the steel underneath starts to rust.

The most common causes of rust formation are mechanical damage to the coating, for example during transport, installation or vandalism. Small scratches or dents are enough to expose the steel to the elements. For outdoor courts, the environment also plays a major role: locations close to the sea, in urban areas with air pollution or in places with a lot of rainfall are more susceptible to corrosion than sheltered indoor locations.

A second cause is poor quality of the original coating. When the coating adheres insufficiently or has been applied too thinly, it loses its protective effect faster. This is one reason why the quality of the surface treatment during the production of the steel structure directly determines the lifespan of the court.

When can rust on a padel structure still be repaired?

Rust on a padel structure can be repaired as long as the damage remains superficial. That means: the rust is in or directly under the coating, the steel itself is still intact, there is no visible pitting or structural weakening, and the connection points and welds are not affected. In that case, targeted treatment of the affected spots is sufficient.

When rust has penetrated deeper into the steel, this is called structural corrosion. You recognise it by pits in the steel, blistering layers that come off layer by layer, or profiles that visibly become thinner. In that situation, surface treatment no longer offers a lasting solution. Affected components must then be replaced.

Connection points and welds are extra vulnerable. Moisture collects easily here and the coating at these spots is sometimes applied less well. Always check these points first during an inspection. An experienced structural engineer can assess whether the structure still meets the structural requirements, even after repair.

How do you repair surface rust on a steel padel structure?

You repair surface rust on a steel padel structure by removing the rust from the affected spot, cleaning the substrate and then re-coating it. This is a structured process in which the order and the quality of the materials determine how long the repair lasts.

The approach in steps:

  1. Inspection: Map out the extent of the rust. Check whether it is surface rust or structural damage.
  2. Mechanical rust removal: Remove loose rust and damaged coating with a wire brush, sandpaper or grinding disc. Make sure you get down to bare steel.
  3. Chemical treatment: Apply a rust converter to the cleaned spot. This agent reacts with any remaining rust and prepares the steel for the new coating.
  4. Applying a primer: A zinc-rich primer gives the steel protection against moisture again. This is comparable to the protection that hot-dip galvanising offers, but applied locally.
  5. Finishing coat: Apply a suitable topcoat that matches the existing coating of the structure in colour and composition.

Do this work in dry weather and at temperatures above 10 degrees Celsius. Moisture and cold disrupt the adhesion of the coating. When the rust appears in several places at once, it is wise to have the entire structure and wind load assessed by a specialist.

What does it cost to have a rusty padel structure repaired?

The cost of repairing a rusty padel structure varies greatly and depends on the extent of the rust, the accessibility of the structure and the materials required. For local surface repair in a limited number of places, the costs are relatively low. As soon as larger surfaces need to be treated or components replaced, the costs rise quickly.

As an indication: repairing a few rust spots on an indoor structure usually takes a few hours of work and a limited materials budget. For an outdoor court with more extensive corrosion, where scaffolding or an aerial work platform is needed for the higher parts of the structure, the costs are considerably higher.

It is wise to also look at the cause when repairing. If the coating is structurally inadequate, it makes more sense to re-coat the entire structure than to keep treating recurring rust spots. A one-off investment in a good coating outweighs the recurring costs of partial repair in many cases.

How do you prevent rust on a new padel structure?

You prevent rust on a new padel structure by choosing a good surface treatment during production and by regularly inspecting and maintaining the structure afterwards. The quality of the coating at the time of construction is the most important factor in the lifespan of the structure.

The most widely used protection methods are hot-dip galvanising and powder coating. Hot-dip galvanising applies a layer of zinc over the entire steel surface, including welded joints and hard-to-reach places. This gives uniform and durable protection. Powder coating adds a coloured finishing layer that protects the steel further and gives the court a well-kept appearance.

Additional requirements apply to outdoor courts. The structure is permanently exposed to rainfall, temperature changes and wind. Hot-dip galvanised steel is the standard for outdoor applications in many situations, but the quality of the execution remains decisive. Minor damage during transport or installation must be repaired immediately, before the court is taken into use.

Preventive maintenance consists of:

  • An annual visual inspection of the entire structure, with extra attention to connection points, welds and the underside of the posts.
  • Immediate repair of damage to the coating, even small scratches.
  • Regular cleaning of the structure to prevent dirt, algae and moisture build-up.
  • Checking that the drainage around the court works properly, so that water does not stand against the posts for long periods.

For an outdoor padel court, structural maintenance is not an option but a necessity. The environment places higher demands on the structure than is the case with an indoor court.

What warranty applies to the steel structure of a padel court?

The warranty on the steel structure of a padel court differs per provider and depends on the terms agreed at purchase. We offer a 15-year warranty on the steel structure. This is a longer warranty period than is customary in the market and applies specifically to the structure itself, in accordance with the general terms and conditions.

It is important to know exactly what the warranty covers. The 15-year warranty we offer applies to the steel structure. The coating, the artificial turf and the LED lighting fall under their own warranty conditions, which can differ per component. Ask every provider explicitly what the warranty covers and what the conditions are for keeping it.

In practice, a warranty on the structure is only relevant when the court is also properly maintained. Rust damage caused by neglect or by damage that was not repaired in time generally falls outside the warranty provisions. Preventive maintenance is therefore not only sensible from a cost perspective, but also a condition for keeping the warranty.
